Description: The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Speech and Language Therapy programme is a four-year programme designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the standards of proficiency set by Council for Professions Complementary to Medicine (CPCM). Upon successful completion of the programme, graduates will hold a B.Sc. Speech and Language Therapy (Hons) at MQF/EQF Level 6.
This programme prepares students to become competent speech-language pathologists capable of preventing, assessing, diagnosing, and treating various speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Additionally, the programme equips graduates with the necessary skills to work with individuals experiencing voice and literacy difficulties and those with hearing impairments or severe language disorders. The BSc programme also encompasses research, counselling, and interprofessional collaboration, in alignment with CPCM guidelines.
Speech Therapist or speech language pathologists (SLPs) play a critical role in improving individuals’ communication and swallowing abilities. They work with diverse populations, including children and adults, to assess, diagnose, intervene, and treat various disorders. SLPs also provide aural rehabilitation for the hearing-impaired, implement augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems, evaluate communication and swallowing disorders, and offer training and education to families, caregivers, and other professionals. They often collaborate with experts from different disciplines and may engage in research, private practice, or clinical supervision.
